RECORDS ON TWO WHEELS

The current bicycle speed record belongs to American Denise Mueller-Korenek – in 2018, she hit 183.9 miles per hour (295.6 km/h) on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA. The dragster, to which the athlete’s bike was tethered, accelerated it to 240 km/h. The cable was then disconnected, and Denise was able to reach a speed of 295.6 km/h and maintain it for the required record time. The Bonneville Salt Flats is one of the flattest places on the planet and many records have been set there, such as the previous speed record of 268.83 km/h held by the Dutch cyclist Fred Rompelberg, which Denis wanted to break. It was set on a bike with a windshield. Fred was greatly helped by the “air bag” of the car driving ahead.

At the Phoenix International Raceway in Arizona, USA, in April 1990, Michael Secrest reversed the record distance of 1958.196 km.

SINGLE-WHEELED SPRINT RECORD

Peter Rosendaal set the 100-meter sprint record with 12.11 seconds (speed 29.72 km/h) when starting from a standing start. The record was set on March 25, 1994, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

HIGHEST LAND SPEEDS OF BICYCLE-POWERED VEHICLES

Fred Markham set the speed record for a solo bicycle-powered vehicle at 105.38 km/h in the 200 m distance, starting on the move. The record was set on May 11, 1986 in Mono Lake, California, USA.

Pat Kinch, in a solo ride on the Kingscycle Bean, set the speed record in the hour-long race, starting from the spot, at 75.57 km/h. The record was set at the Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedford, UK.

THE WORLD’S LARGEST BICYCLE

The world’s largest bicycle (by wheel diameter) is the Frankensicle bicycle. Its height is 3.40 m and wheel diameter is 3.05 m. The bike was built by Dave Moore of Rosemead, California, USA. On June 4, 1989, Steve Gordon of Moorpark, California, rode it first.

THE BIGGEST TRICYCLE

The Dillon Colossal tricycle, designed by Arthur Dillon and built by Dave Moore in 1994, has 3.35m diameter rear wheels and a 1.77m diameter front wheel.

LONGEST BICYCLE.

The longest bicycle without a third stabilizer wheel is 22.24 m long and weighs 340 kg. The bike was designed and built by Terry Tessman of Pahiatua, New Zealand. On February 27, 1988, four cyclists rode it for 246 m.

THE SMALLEST BICYCLE

The wheel diameter of the world’s smallest rideable bicycle is 1.9 cm. Its designer, Neville Patten of Gladstone, Queensland, Australia, rode it 4.1 m on March 25, 1988.

THE SMALLEST UNICYCLE

On July 28, 1996, Peter Rosendaal (Sweden) at the University of Physical Education in Budapest, Hungary, rode 4 m on a unicycle with a height of 20 cm and a wheel diameter of 18 mm. There were no attachments or extensions on the bike.
